The state of conservation of this intricately carved frame was rather poor; the polychromy was flaking, and the wood was riddled with worm holes which, however, did not affect the overall solidity of the Tondo. Earlier interventions on the gilded surface, on the cracks, and reintegrations on the outer edge of the frame are noted. The operations of restoration are detailed. Hot applications of Primal AC 33 consolidated the paint, gilded areas were first stabilized then cleaned of the dark coating left by former varnishes with acetone and water; a butylamine-based solvent was used on older, hardened layers as they were revealed by the first acetone-water treatment. When regilding was done, visible outlines of interventions were left. Painting of the carved faces was shown to have been very finely executed. All three layers of paint on a sawed-off part of the edge were mechanically removed. Certain alterations on the border were left untouched. The disinfecting agent Xilamon BN was injected into the front and brushed over the back. All wood-borers holes were filled with a Vinavil-based mixture of stucco, gesso, and sawdust. Cracks and gaps were filled or appropriately repaired and a protective coating of mastic in turpentine was applied.
