The Stedelijk Museum, built between 1892 and 1895, has the responsibility to exhibit not only contemporary art but also other collections, such as those of the Asian Art Museum. The collection now comprises paintings, sculptures, objects, drawings, prints, posters, videotapes, films, books and applied and industrial art objects. Three restoration departments cover sculpture and painting, graphic arts and photographs, and applied arts. A restoration of particular interest was that of the small museum bar where the walls had been painted in 1951 by Karel Appel and subsequently damaged by water. The restoration was completed in 1987.
