Restoration of approximately 300 musical instruments was carried out at the Victoria and Albert Museum from 1964-1968. The instruments were prepared for display in a special gallery. The restorers' training was not specialized and at first they lacked proper equipment. Problems and conservation treatments include: the realignment of warped wood, the strengthening of weak points with linen tape, the temporary bracing of cracks with removable sellotape, the replacement of surface decoration lost by shrinkage, the treatment of curled and brittle ivory, the construction of special clamps, the removal of old varnish and surface cleaning.
