As the largest library in the world, with over 80 million items, the Library of Congress encounters a broad range of problems in conserving its collections. The Preservation Office (consisting of five major areas -- binding; preservation microfilming; research and technology; restoration office responsible for rare book, paper and phased conservation; and the National Preservation Program) tackles this challenge partly by pioneering new approaches and by applying new technologies to the treatment/care of library materials.
