A literature study, using both primary and secondary sources, of the book printing processes in Europe between 1550 and 1800, with occasional references to earlier and later processes. The study was instigated by the question of what causes the discoloration of paper in books printed during the period, and hence pays especial attention to what happens to the paper on its way from the papermill the bookbinder. -- CAL
