Conventional silver halide photography is being replaced in many applications by electronic imaging technologies, particularly by video imaging. Cost effectiveness and the instant availability of the image on a viewing screen are but two reasons for this change. Traditional photographic materials have one particular requirement that seems to be dreaded by anyone involved in photography: they are the only materials collected in archives and libraries that require processing in a series of chemical solutions in order to produce a visible record. Modern safety film is clearly superior to any other nonpaper, nonparchment record material in common use or under consideration for use in libraries and archives. -- SCMRE
