The purpose of this investigation is to determine the nature of the extractable components in contemporary cotton fabrics degraded by various methods and the effect of cleaning on the properties of the fabric. For comparison, an ancient archeological textile will also be examined. From these measurements, it is also hoped to identify the fabric degradation processes occurring in archeological specimens so that they can be slowed or stopped and ideally reversed.
