Research activities during the report period (July 1-September 30) involved one graduate student and concentrated on measuring the physical properties of yarns taken from mortuary wrapping cloths from Peru and setting up additional chemical and physical methods for evaluating cellulostic materials. These include wet chemical methods for measuring carbonyl groups in cellulose including carboxyl, ketone, and aldehyde; the yellowing and weight loss of cellulose during bicarbonate extraction which provides a measure of the amount of terminal C*l1*s aldehyde groups and the degree of polymerization (DP); intrinsic viscosity in cupriethylene diamine to measure DP; moisture regain to measure crystallinity and accessibility; fiber density, also to measure crystallinity; and copper number, a measure of the amount of reducing groups. Some preliminary measurements have been made on cotton and on artificially degraded cotton. As planned in the revised budget, a second graduate student became involved in the project on September 1. This student will concentrate on the application of resin systems to degraded cotton.
