Abstract
Deteriorating factors for leather and parchment are described briefly. Storage at 16-18 degrees C and RH 45-60% is recommended. The procedure for treating leather bindings is described: the binding is cleaned with distilled water then with 96% ethanol, both to disinfect and to remove water. After 15 minutes the leather is treated with glycerine. One hour later a mixture of neat's foot oil (klauenoel), beeswax, thymol and p-hydroxydiphenylamine is applied.
