The author describes the conditions under which archaeological leather is preserved in wet burial environments. Such leather when excavated must not be permitted to dry out. This results in hard, brittle, shrunken, and deformed material. Excavated leather should be stored in water to which sodium tartrate is added (to prevent the removal of tannins) or frozen. The author recommends conservation as follows: cleaning in water to which a fungicide has been added (Tego 51 B), impregnating with a natural fat dissolved in an alcohol and toluene mixture, and air drying.
