Abstract
Many contemporary artists mount paper onto canvas before attaching it to stretchers. Not only does this help to solve problems of framing, exhibition and transport, but the impression of the canvas frequently plays an aesthetic role as well. But past experience with paper stuck onto canvas shows that conservation problems will arise because the two materials react differently to environmental changes. Collaboration with contemporary artists is urged so that the materials used can contribute towards, not detract from, preservation.
