Abstract
Iron staining in paper is a problem from both the aesthetic and conservation points of view. This paper describes the use of different chelate and reducing agent systems for the possible removal of iron from paper. Sodium tripolyphosphosphate, sodium diethylene-triamepentacetic acid, sodium, n,n, dihydroxyethylglycine, sodium dithionite and sodium borohydride were used at different phs, and concentrations and in different combinations. The author describes the results from treatments designed to remove reddish ferric oxide (previously deposited in the test paper) and controlling the results obtained using atomic absorption analysis for iron and sodium residues, colourimetric analysis, reflectance at 420nm andvisual appraisal. Sodium tripolyphosphate and sodium dithionite were both good, and the two combined gave the best results. Tables, references.
