An oil painting by N.B.C. Love, had a thin oil design layer over a thick white lead andoil ground, on top of a heavy priming of calcium carbonate in a glue-like binder. The support was a heavy laminated paperboard. Cleavage had occured between the priming layer and the support which had shrunk, leading to extensive cupping and craking of the paint film. This paper describes the work undertaken to allow the paint film to expand and lie down flat by transferring it to a new support. Photographs, line drawings.
