The technical study of thirty pastel works on paper by Jean-Francois Millet in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts is described. The study included examination of the pastels with magnification, in normal and raking light, and with ultraviolet and infrared radiation, and analysis of pigment and fiber samples from six representative works. Millet's methods, as revealed by the technical study, are compared to methods described in 19th century pastel manuals. Changes from original appearance are described and explained.
