Abstract
A limestone altar triptych of the 15th century was installed in 1903 in the newly-built Isabella Stewart Museum in Boston. Consolidation experiments were carried out in the fifties to arrest deterioration caused by the object's climatic exposure. In 1971 the entire tabernacle was treated with barium ethyl sulphate. Results of chemical analyses on stone, soluble salts and pigments are used for the diagnosis of decay. Recommendations for treatment and protection are given. Diagram, photographs, references.
