Abstract
High-pressure metamorphic rocks of the Japanese Islands are classified into 9 belts or zones: Tokoro, Kamuikotan, East Abukuma- Motai, Hida Marginal-Joetsu, Sangun, Sanbagawa, Kurosegawa, isolated area of Kyushu, and Yaeyama. The Kamuikotan, East Abukuma-Motai, Hida Marginal-Joetsu and Kurosegawa zones are associated with abundant serpentinite. All but the last three are paired with low-P, high-T terranes. The Sangun and Sanbagawa belts are paired with the low-P, high-T Hida and Ryoke belts respectively. It is still not clear if the Kamuikotan Zone is paired with any low-pressure terrane in the Japanese Islands. The other terranes are small and of uncertain significance. Tectonic position, age, protolith, and metamorphic facies series of the high-pressure metamorphic belts are summarized briefly. Comments on paired belts, eclogites, and the jadite+quartz assemblage are given in the concluding remarks.
