The technique of interferometry is being applied to the field of microwear analysis as a method to quantify certain aspects of polish microtopographies, and the features that can occur thereon, that have hitherto defied rigorous description or analysis. The newly available data are then interpreted through use of an explicit model of the physical conditions necessary for polish development in order to provide an independent assessment of the particular causative contact/worked materials.
