At five locations on the Cycladic island of Siphnos remains of antique mines were found. Lead-silver ores are found there as inclusions in iron-manganese ores. By means of an analysis of trace elements and lead isotopes, it could be shown that the silver of Siphnos was used for minting as early as the 5th century B.C. -- AATA
