Abstract
Slags and copper metal from west African furnaces dated to 2190-1150 B.C. were analyzed. Some copper furnaces from the area are sketched. It is likely that native copper was smelted, though the slags contain higher-than-usual amounts of lime and dolomite. Metal samples consisted of native copper with several percent arsenic. The site gives evidence of a Copper Age in the region, at an early date. -- AATA
