Four rich houses previously excavated at this site have received international attention for the beauty of their mosaics but the study of their peristyle gardens had been neglected up to the publication of this work. The first garden (House of the Water Fountains) is distinguished by the presence of a basin occupying the whole surface of the courtyard, but containing six watertight masonry planters, and fed by 400 small waterspouts, a unique feature in the Roman provinces; its dimensions, formal layout and other features are noted. The peristyle of the House of Cantaber is described next with details on its design, basins, and spatial relationship with the house. The more modest House of the Mosaics with Swastika is studied next. Last is the House of the Skeletons, with its stylistic differences possibly attributable to its date. The rarity of dry containers within basins constitutes an archaeological problem the author discusses. The garden of the Palaestra is studied separately. It is representative of the role of gardens in thermal architecture. -- AATA
