An overview is given of the state of research in the area of Roman gardens in the Roman provinces of Gaul. Vienne, near Lyon, belongs to a more northern environment than Provence, described as an extension of Italy. Hence this chapter studies the specific differences presented by the style of Roman houses and their peristyle-gardens in this region. Three typical house-garden arrangements are described that illustrate the large size and important place of gardens, and the elaborate design of basins and pools. An evolution in the style of basins is suggested. The usefulness of the proximity of water to the house is also discussed. -- AATA
