The excavations at Pompeii, Herculaneum, and surrounding areas allowed archaeologists to study the plan and land use of a Roman town thus throwing light on the character and significance of the garden in Roman life and new insights into the values of that civilization. It was assessed that gardens were an almost always present and an integral part of the domestic habitation. It has been possible to trace domestic architecture at Pompeii for a period of almost 400 years.
