The impetus for this conference was the planning of the Library of Congress' cold storage facility in 1976. The Library realized that a great deal of information was available on technical aspects of constructing a cold storage facility for film but that very little information was available on actually operating such a facility. The meeting was called to initiate an exchange of information among current and potential users of such facilities. The focus of the meeting was primarily problems associated with color motion picture film but consideration is given to earlier film formats and still film. Included are reports by 14 institutions which own and operate cold storage vaults, with short reports by six other institutions. Also included is a technical discussion and suggested topics for future research. Cold storage facilities have typically experienced problems with the regulation of humidity and the maintenance of equipment. Film typically gives off odor-causing by-products such as Butanol which cause anxiety and discomfort among staff members. Very little is known about the effects of removing film from cold storage to standard room temperatures for use and then returning the material to cold storage. The long term effects of such cycling on the characteristics of films are unknown. -- AATA
