The leather elements are described together with the application techniques on the silk. Investigation is carried out on the existing relationship between choice of material and depicted parts - body (faces and hands), clothig particulars (garments, decorations, footwear), letters (inscription), weapons (spear-head). The direct observation of the artefact performed with the further assistance of microscope techniques enables the establishment of an initial set of basic information regarding materials and execution techniques. The leather elements are examined: skin, gilding, and pictorial decoration, reference is made to transfer techniques concerning the prepatory design and to several stylistic details. Deterioration features are also described for each material. Special attention is devoted to the morphology of leather deformation and probable determining causes. Indications are given relating to the 1934-35 restoration as well as previous, as yet undated, treatments. In view of the exceptional character of the artefact and of the limited extent of leather surfaces, questions are posed about the usefulness and viability of a series of investigations for the characterisation of constituent materials and the estimation of the state of conservation. Lastly, operational suggestions (conservation and restoration) are formulated with consideration taken of the possible removal of leather elements from the dilk during treatment. Both study and treatment envisage the realisation of graphic and photographic documentation: general criteria and methods are indicated.
