This banner is a most important Italian medieval example and is perhaps the only one surviving made up of silk and leather. The image of St. George who, mounted on a horse, kills the dragon with his lance in front of Princess Cleodolinda and her parents, appears on both sides. The banner was probably commissioned by Cardinal Jacopo Stefaneschi to donate it to the basilica of San Giorgio in Velabro, where he had performed titular duties since 1295, in substitution for the vexillum of St. George (a fragment of which is said to have been taken to Rome by Pope Zacharias, 741-52, together with the martyr's bones). When the Bandiera di San Giorgio had worn out it was put in a reliquary container and, thus protected, carried around in procession on top of a pole. Transferred to the Vatican, the banner was restored in 1934-35. Finally, in 1966 the Vatican donated it to the City of Rome. An evaluation will be made abount maintaining the painted silk support of the last restoration, given the interest of this type of treatment. As a result of the importance and significance attached to this banner, it will once more be put on display in the Sala delle Bandiere in the Campidoglio. Studies will further be carried out as to the work necessary for adapting the room and display case to conservation requirements.
