Presentation and discussion of the results of a series of preliminary chemical and physical tests executed on 20 samples of historical vegetable tanned calf leather of different origins and in different states of deterioration, collected in each of the four countries involved in an international research project sponsored by the EEC. This work was carried out in order to get as much information as possible regarding the composition of naturally aged leather, to be used in the successive steps of the project.
