The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) studied the erosion of the Fossil Forest site on Axel Heiberg Island, mapping exposed stumps and logs, returning one year later (1989) to assess further erosion. Ground and air photodocumentation was also undertaken. Natural erosion appears to remove 1% to 2% of the soil, leaving unprotected waterlogged frozen stumps and logs which then disintegrate. Human activity exacerbates erosion. Mapping of the hill continues. The author includes excerpts from the diary he kept on his trip to Geodetic Hills, describing mapping, and the day's routine. Studies were assisted by the polar Continent Shelf Project of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources who maintained radio contact and provided air transportation. Conservation of waterlogged wood from the site was described in an earlier Newsletter (Dec.'87).
