A bracket clock, attributed to Andrée Charles Boulle (1642- 1732) is treated at the Canadian Conservation Institute. The clock case is an assemblage of three layers : the wooden carcass, the inlay of tortoiseshell and brass, and the ormolu mounts. The wooden framework for the original bracket is missing. Previously restored, the clock's condition now includes loose, detached or missing inlay. In the treatment the detached structural and decorative elements are first pieced together and the inlay design is determined. Missing inlay is reproduced using genuine tortoiseshell and brass cut using existing sections as templates. Research conducted to find a suitable adhesive results in the use of sturgeon glue with five percent glycerin to provide a strong flexible bond. the decision to recreate the bracket is still to be made in this ongoing project.
