Abstract
This paper concerns the restoration of terrestrial and celestial globes, with specific descriptions of the work carried out on a pair of eighteenth-century globes made by John Senex. A brief historical investigation precedes the description of the condition and subsequent progression of treatment according to the extent of damage present. The techniques involved include the removal of varnish layers and paper cleaning with various solvents, the removal and repair of damaged paper, the repair of damaged plaster and the replacement of paper gores, retouching the repaired areas with matching facsimile work and revarnishing the spheres, treatment of metal-work, compass and horizon rings, and the final protection of the globes afforded by the design and provision of ultra-violet-filtering Perspex hemispheric domes.
