The Lenten veil is a curtain which was hung up during the Quadragesima Fast to conceal the high altar and sometimes also side altars. The article gives its historical origins and discusses iconography, types, and materials. It describes the Tuechlein technique of glue tempera which was often used on unsized linen. It gives a history of Lenten veils and wall coverings in Austria and four case histories of their conservation treatments.
