Abstract
An air pollution survey regarding the deterioration of mural paintings of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua was carried out between 1977 and 1979. The frescoes were deteriorating on account of the attack of sulfuric acid, which transformed calcium carbonate into calcium sulfate. The sulfuric acid formed from sulfur compounds in the air.
