Artificial desert varnish is prepared by precipitating FE and MN oxides and hydroxides on to disturbed rock surfaces. The colour can be varied to match the colour of the surrounding varnish. The artificial desert varnish is simple to make, inexpensive and durable. The technique has been applied to the restoration of defaced petroglyphs at several sites in Arizona.
