Abstract
The authors describe the construction of a system to remove stains from paper. A stained area is supported on gauze and a vacuum is applied to one side of the gauze. This prevents solvent, which is applied to remove the stain, from spreading by capillary action -- thus concentrating its action in the desired area. The effect of this method of stain removal on several different types of paper is detailed. The method removes the soluble portion of the stain but is ineffective in removing stains which are either chemically bound or have strong physical bonds with the paper. The method does not appear to affect the physical condition of the paper.
