Abstract
Tar samples from two shipwrecks laying in the Gulf of Finland were analysed by GC and GC/MS and compared. Tar surfaces having been exposed directly to the surrounding water for over 200 years were different in their chemical composition compared to non-exposed parts of the tar. The common feature of surface tar samples from both shipwrecks was the predominance of tetrahydroabietic acid and 18-norabieta-8,11,13-triene.
