Abstract
The opaque red glass ingots found by Mallowan in the Burnt Palace at Nimrud are rich in lead and copper, and colored by dendritic cuprite. Replicates of this glass were made in the laboratory and the effects of varying batch materials, copper, tin and antimony contents, melting temperature, and heat treatment upon the products were tested. In nearly all cases it was difficult to prevent the production of appreciable quantities of a bronze alloy as a pool in the bottom of the crucible. -- AATA
