This paper surveys the techniques used for gilding silver up to and including the Roman/Byzantine period: foil gilding; leaf gilding; diffusion bonding; cold mercury gilding; fire gilding. Two other techniques which have been postulated previously are also mentioned: electrochemical gilding and electrolytic plating. The paper then discusses descriptions of gilding by classical authors. 79 gilt silver objects are listed with comments on the gilding technology employed. -- AATA
