Abstract
Samples taken from Stradivarius stringed instruments showed, by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis, that the renowned surface treatment included a thin application of a local pozzolana volcanic ash between the wood and the varnish. A scanning electron micrograph shows the layer clearly and analysis indicates a clear resemblance between the layer and samples of local pozzolana ash. -- AATA
