Nineteenth century corrosion studies, including the first paint testing experiments, early patents (e.g for use of red lead in 1852), as well as some typical anticorrosive paint formulations are reviewed. Other protective measures are also noted, principally in the use of tar, clay, chalk and cement. -- AATA
