Use of lye (sodium hydroxide) or TSP (trisodium phosphate) solutions as paint removers for wood or metals (except aluminum) instead of the solvent based commercial paint removers is described. Cautions for preparation and use of the strong solutions are given. Technique involves application of the lye (or TSP) solutions with natural fiber brush or cotton mop, lifting of paint with a putty knife or similar instrument, flushing with water, neutralizing with an acid (vinegar is suggested). Problems of using a water-base stripper are mentioned. Surface darkening may be expected on some woods, but may be corrected by a chlorine bleach. Economy is cited. Ineffective on urethane, alkyd and epoxy paints. Starch used to gel. -- AATA
