Is the museum archaeologist merely the caretaker of a warehouse? Why do archaeologists draw up important policy statements without mentioning the possible contribution of museums? Clearly, if museums are to regain in British archaeology the role they lost by failing to respond to the rescue crisis, they must adopt much more positive attitudes to collection policies (particularly with rescue excavation material and treasure hunting) and must acquire a firmer voice in local planning decisions. Documentation systems must be effective and flexible; conservation services need still greater emphasis; showcase interpretation must not run too far ahead of its raw materials; and museum research must regain the confidence of archaeological colleagues. -- AATA
