Abstract
Direct measurements of the Ê3-particle dose-rate of archaeological objects using sensitive thermoluminescent (TL) dosimeters (e.g., CaF2, CaSO4) have been carried out by various authors in near 2pi geometry. Dose calibration of the dosimeter has been achieved via a calibrated 90Sr/90Y source. Electron backscattering is not negligible for these dosimeters in the electron energy region of interest and exhibits a strong angular dependence. A general method is proposed for the calculation of the mean energy imparted to the dosimeter using empirical relations and Monte Carlo calculations for the estimation of the energy that is carried out by the backscattered electrons. -- AATA
