Removing the fixer from photographic materials is described as diffusion rather than washing and various apparatus for removing fixer from prints are discussed and evaluated. A test solution for residual hypo (fixer) is described with a note that the usual method of testing a print border is likely to be misleading since central portions usually have considerable fixer remaining after the edges are clear. Author's tests showed that a water wash of 13/4 to 2 hours at about 2 gallons per minute at 68° F would remove hypo from paper-base prints in the Zone VI washer.
