Abstract
Niklaus Manuel, called Deutsch, a contemporary of Duerer, is probably the most important Swiss painter of the early 16th century. For the catalogue, compiled by the Swiss Institute for Art Research in Zurich, almost all the paintings were scientifically examined (emission spectrum analysis, X-ray diffraction powder pattern, thin layer chromatography, microchemistry and microscopy) with reference to the composition of their colors and the painting technique. The tests and their results are described in detail. -- AATA
