If a specific feature is highly unusual, it is justifiable to explore whether the existing instances do not stem from a common source. The appliqué relief decoration in <i>pastiglia of the painted panels at Karlstejn Castle in Bohemia do not have any counterpart in the Bohemian production but analogies can be found in a few earlier paintings in England and in the contemporary ones (1360's) in the Rhineland. The procedure continued to be used in the wider Rhineland both on panels and wood sculptures showing that it was firmly rooted in the West and only imported to Bohemia. The origin of this pre-stamped relief sheets technique is an imitation of appliqué in more precious materials -- silver and gold. As such, it existed in simple forms in the West since the Romanesque, but a likelihood is stressed of a revitalization of the idea by imitating the metallic covers of the icons made on Cyprus, which was transmitted to the West via Southern Italy. -- AATA
