This work is basically a revised edition of one section of the author's first book, <i>History and practice of carbon processes</i> (1982). The section covers dichromate pigment printing processes that can be made without a transfer, hence their classification as direct carbon processes. Aside from the ordinary gum process reviewed in great historical and technical details, the book has notes on variations that have been known as Artigue, Auto-Pastel, Bühler, Farinaud, Fresson, Arvel, Quadrichromie-Fresson, Hochheimer, Leto, Satino Carbon, and Schwerterpigmentpapier. The practical sections of the book point out the importance of avoiding shortcuts in the production of carbon prints as they affect the permanence of the paper support and/or image. -- AATA
