In the early 1960s, many different conservation treatments were used in the British Museum in an attempt to stabilize lead objects. These included consolidation, ion-exchange resins, and electrolytic reduction. After treatment, a coating, often wax, was applied. The effect of these treatments has been evaluated. The body metal and corrosion products of treated lead objects have been analyzed. Experimental work has been carried out using electrolytic reduction on corroded lead samples to determine the effect of this treatment and the degree of protection afforded by coating against an aggressive environment under controlled conditions.
