Abstract
The use of historical and current literature sources is discussed in relation to the use of bitumen in mummification. The author illustrates how mistranslation of early manuscripts can confuse the issue while recent scientific examinations must be interpreted with caution. The role of bitumen as an inhibitor is also discussed. -- AATA
