Archaeological excavations carried out in 1967 at the highland Peruvian site of Ayapata, Department of Huancavelica, revealed a rich inventory of broken pottery apparently intentionally fragmented and ritually deposited in 8 subterrean caches. Stylistically dated to Epoch 2A of the Middle Horizon Period (ca. 600-900 A.D.), a representative sample of ceramic material was spectrographically analyzed at the Southern PerÇ92 Corporation minerology laboratory at Toquepala. The principal minerals identified, in descending frequency, are plagioclase, hematites, limonite, quartz, biotite, calcite and sericite, occurring in particles ranging from < 800 to₁< 80 microns. -- AATA
