The general characteristics of 16th century mural paintings done by the Franciscan, Augustinian, and Dominican religious orders in convents in the Mexican states of Tlaxcala and Puebla were observed in order to categorize them by technique, color, and style. Each mural was directly traced and colored to match. The location in the convent, dates, and general characteristics were noted and dimensions carefully recorded. The drawings were then reduced 25 to 50% for convenience. Fourteen black and white photographs and drawings illustrate a combination of imported and indigenous motifs. -- AATA
