This site contains some of the most artistic colonial structures in the Tlaxcala, Puebla region, along with some of the major examples of indigenous sculpture ihperpreting European models (called Tequitqui). Partially destroyed and heavily restored in 1945, the remaining richly decorated <i>capillas posas and portal had been neglected by the local populace. Plants were intruding into the structures; a vehicle ramp, accumulation of trash, and a basketball court all degraded the atmosphereand the stability of the monuments. Historical investigations, photography, and a detailed plan were followed by a general cleaning of the structures' surfaces, removing intrusive vegetation from the buildings and atrium, relocating the basketball court, consolidating facing and loose fragments on the atrium walls and <i>capillas posas and whitewashing the cloister's walls. Step two will include further consolidation of atrium walls, collating newly located fragments, sealing domes of the <i>capillas posas, and demolishing access ramps which are now over original steps. -- AATA
